What It Is

The Imum Coeli is the degree directly opposite the Midheaven, at the base of the chart wheel. In Latin, imum coeli means “bottom of the sky.” It represents the point in the sky that was furthest beneath the horizon at the moment of birth, the unseen lowest point of the arc the Sun travels each day.

Like the Descendant, the IC is a derived point: you cannot have a Midheaven without simultaneously having an IC. The two form a single vertical axis running from the chart’s peak to its foundation. In Z13’s 13 whole-sign house system, the IC will not necessarily fall in the 4th house. Its house placement depends on where the chart’s geometry places it, which varies with the unequal constellation spans.

What It Represents

The IC describes the foundation. It points to roots: where you come from, the home and family environment that shaped your earliest experience, and the private inner ground you return to when the public world recedes.

Where the Midheaven is what you build outward, the IC is what you build on. It carries the texture of childhood, ancestry, and the emotional baseline formed before you had the language to describe it. The IC often shows what feels most deeply familiar, and also what feels most private: the part of yourself not on offer for public display.

This is also the angle associated with home in a literal sense: the physical environment you need in order to feel grounded, the kind of domestic life you are drawn toward, and the place (real or interior) you think of when you think of sanctuary.

The IC-MC axis asks what you came from and what you are reaching toward. Neither pole is complete without the other. The foundation makes the height possible; the aspiration gives the roots a reason to hold.

The IC in Z13

Because the IC is always the exact opposite degree of the Midheaven, it shares the same Z13 logic: mapped to actual IAU constellation boundaries, potentially in a different sign than the tropical IC. Degree values in larger constellations can exceed 30 degrees and remain valid.

The IC through the Signs

SignIC in…
AriesEarly environment characterized by energy, independence, or a sense of having to forge your own path early. Foundation built on self-reliance. Home feels most grounding when it has room for initiative and the freedom to act without too much explanation.
